Updated Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines
American Cancer Society
The most significant recommendations were:
| Mammography:
The organization despite any controversy strongly feels that
mammography is effective in decreasing mortality from breast
cancer and recommends annual mammography for women aged 40 years
and greater. |
| Breast
Self -Examination: was not considered to be of
value in decreasing mortality and therefore the recommendation
has now changed to breast self-examination being optional or
being done less frequently. A note, however, is that women
should report any change noted to their doctor promptly. |
| Clinical
Breast Examination: should be part of a woman's
periodic health examination by a professional and should take
place every three years for women in their 20's and 30's and
annually after age 40. |
| Older
women and women with serious health problems:
should continue with annual mammography irrespective of age
unless the life expectancy of the person is significantly
shortened or they have very serious medical problems. |
| Women
known to be at increased risk: may benefit from
starting mammography as early as age 30. They may also benefit
from the use of breast ultrasound and/or magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI). |
